Michigan Insurance CE Hours Required

  • 24 hours are required biennially.

New Requirement to Sell Annuities in Michigan

  • Effective June 29, 2021: Licensees who have already completed a 4-hour annuity course prior to 6/29/2021 may complete a 1-hour annuity best interest course or complete the new 4-hour annuity best interest course.- Licensees who have not completed a 4-hour annuity certification course must take the annuity best interest 4-hour requirement prior to selling annuities.
    • Licensees can take the 1-hour course only up to 6 months after the effective date.
    • Producers do not need to submit information to the Department of Insurance, but should retain all course completion certificates so they can provide verification to their insurers.

Michigan State-Specific Insurance CE Courses

  • 3 hours must be in ethics.
  • Agents selling, soliciting, or negotiating long-term care insurance must complete an initial 8 hour course on Long Term Care insurance and 4 hours on Long Term Care every two years thereafter.

Michigan Insurance CE Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • Licensees with dates of birth in odd years will have CE due the first day of their birth month every two years in all odd years. Licensees with dates of birth in even years will have CE due the first day of their birth month every two years in all even years.
  • Biennial compliance date is determined by the last digit of the license number (Social Security Number) and the first letter of agent’s last name.

Michigan Insurance CE – Types of Courses Accepted

  • Independent self-study courses and classroom.

Monitor Requirements

  • Exams MUST BE monitored by a disinterested third party.
  • For online courses where a proctor is required, DOI has created the Continuing Education Attestation of Personal Responsibility Form. This form will require individuals to attest that they have not received outside assistance while completing the online course exam. This form must be sent to the provider within 15 days of completing the course.

Reporting to Your State

  • The state charges $1.00 per credit hour to get your CE reported
  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.
  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.
  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net

Michigan Insurance CE Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • Producers and Solicitors with a July 1, 2018 CE review date, who complete more than 24 hours of continuing education credits in the applicable two year review period, may carry over up to 12 hours to the next review period. A producer may not apply any hours in ethics to the next review period or any course taken twice in the previous two year period.
  • Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal period.

Michigan Insurance CE Exemptions

  • Individuals licensed only for one or more of the following lines: Credit Products, Limited Life, Turkey, Crop & Hail, Travel, Accident and/or Baggage, and/or Title.
  • The CE review date is determined by the month and year of birth. The first CE review date must allow at least 12 months to complete 24 CE credits after the license is first approved.
  • Individuals who apply for and receive a hardship waiver for terminal illness of self or of immediate family member who requires an ordinate amount of care by licensee or military duty.

Method to Certify Completion

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to post your completion results on their systems.

Michigan Non-Resident Producer Requirements

  • Initial LTC Requirement: A non-resident producer must complete an initial 8-hour NAIC Long-term care training course OR complete an 8-hour NAIC LTC course from another state to fulfill Michigan requirements. 
  • On-going LTC Requirement: A 4-hour follow-up LTC course is required by the end of each CE compliance period.
