License Status

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

  • 10 hours are required biennially.
  • 20 hours are required biennially for combined LH/PC license.
  • 10 hours are required biennially for Personal Lines license.
  • New licensees receiving a license after 9/30 of an even numbered year but before 10/1 of an odd year must complete one half of the CE requirements.
  • Farm Mutual Insurer License: 10 hours biennially in P/C insurance
  • Crop and L/H or P/C: 10 hours biennially-max 2 hours in crop and 8 hours in major line

New Requirement to Sell Annuities

  • Annuity – Best Interest Interest Certification: Effective 10/1/2022, before selling, soliciting or negotiating Annuity policies in South Dakota.
    • (a) a new four-credit training course approved by DLR after the effective date of this rule; OR
    • (b) an additional one-time, one-credit training course approved by DLR and provided by an DLR-approved education provider on appropriate sales practices, replacement and disclosure requirements under this rule.

State Specific Insurance Continuing Education Courses

  • Courses must be taken in the lines for which the license is held
  • Combined License (LH/PC) must complete at least 8 hours devoted to one line
  • No more than 50% of required hours may be earned from one insurance company
  • All South Dakota licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a one time 3 hour requirement on flood insurance.
  • LTC Partnership Training Requirement: Producers, must complete an 8 hour Long Term Care training course before they can sell, solicit or negotiate LTC (Long Term Care) insurance in South Dakota; thereafter, they must complete a 4 hour follow-up long term care course biennially.

Insurance Continuing Education Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • Resident producers must complete the Continuing Education (CE) as specified below by the end of their birth month and submit a renewal application prior to the end of their birth month. If a resident producer adds a qualification to their existing license the CE requirements for the new qualification will be waived until their next renewal period. 

Insurance Continuing Education Types of Courses Accepted

  • Independent self study courses, classroom study, internet courses, and company sponsored courses (limited to 50% of requirement for each line).

Monitor Requirements

  • Exams DO NOT require a monitor. 
  • Final exams are also required to be taken as a closed book.

Reporting to Your State

  • $1.25 per credit hour is required to report to your state.
  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.
  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.
  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net

Insurance Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next renewal period.
  • Credit will not be give for a course that is repeated within a renewal period. 

Insurance Continuing Education Exemptions

  • Individuals who have a limited license to sell only credit life or credit health insurance.
  • A resident attorney who is licensed to practice in South Dakota.
  • Individuals who reside outside the United States but hold a South Dakota license.
  • Individuals licensed after 9/30 of an odd year.
  • Individuals who are employed by a trade association and hold a limited license to sell only surety bonds to the association members.
  • Individuals who are at least 65 years old and have been licensed in South Dakota for at least 10 years.
  • Limited or restricted licensees that the director may exempt.
  • Non residents
  • Individuals who are transportation ticket producers of common carriers holding a limited license to sell only travel accident and baggage insurance.
  • Individuals who hold limited license to sell only bail bonds.

Method to Certify Completion

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents

  • Initial LTC Requirements: A non-resident producer must complete an initial 8-hour NAIC LTC training course approved by the state of South Dakota that includes Medicaid information OR complete an 8-hour NAIC LTC course from another state with a 1-hour SD Medicaid related course to fulfill South Dakota requirements.
  • On-going LTC Requirement: A 4-hour follow-up LTC course is required every 24 months.
