License Status

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

  • 24 hours are required biennially, 3 of the 24 must be in ethics

New Requirement to Sell Annuities in Utah

One-time training of a 4-Hour Annuity Suitability and Best Interest Standards course must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

  • Licensees who have already completed a 4-hour annuity course prior to 6/30/2024 may complete a 1-hour annuity best interest course or complete the new 4-hour annuity best interest course. Licensees will only have until 6/30/2025 to be able to take the 1-hour course.
  • Licensees who have not completed an annuity course must take the 4-hour annuity best interests course prior to selling annuities.

State Specific Insurance Continuing Education Courses

  • Hours can be taken in any line of authority for credit
  • 3 hours must be in ethics.
  • 50% of CE credits must be in a classroom setting
  • All Utah licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a one time 3 hour requirement on flood insurance.
  • An individual may not sell, solicit or negotiate LTC insurance unless the individual is licensed as an insurance producer for Life and Health insurance and completed an 3 hours one-time training course and a 3 hour follow-up training course every 24 months thereafter in order to continue to sell LTC policies. 

Insurance Continuing Education Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • First day of the month following the license issuancLicense renewal date is the last day of license issuance month, biennially, based on year of issue.

Insurance Continuing Education Types of Courses Accepted

  • Independent self-study courses (up to one-half of requirement), Courses sponsored by the Insurance company for which licensee is employed (up to one-half of requirement), or Classroom (50% of the total required hours must be taken in a classroom).

Monitor Requirements

  • Exams DO NOT require a monitor.

Reporting to Your State

  • $1.00 per credit hour is required to report to your state.
  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.
  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.
  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net

Insurance Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • Carryover of excess CE credit hours is not allowed.
  • Courses may not be taken more than once in each biennial renewal period.

Insurance Continuing Education Exemptions

  • Individuals who, as of 4/1/90, have held a license in good standing continuously for at least 20 years in any state.
  • Individuals who hold a limited license for credit life and disability insurance
  • Individuals with insurance related professional designations recognized by the Department as requiring continuing education reported to the sponsoring organization.

Method to Certify Completion

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents

  • Initial LTC Requirement: A producer must complete an initial 3-hour NAIC LTC training course approved by the state of Utah OR complete an 8-hour NAIC LTC course from another state to fulfill  Utah requirements.
  • On-going LTC Requirement: A 3-hour follow-up LTC course is required every 2 year in sync with their CE compliance period.
