License Status

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

  • 3 hours must be in ethics.
  • Long Term Care:  Licensees, both resident and non-resident, selling Long-Term Care, Long-Term Care Partnership, or both must complete the Washington LTC Initial 8-hour Education Course by July 1st 2009. Agents are then required to complete an approved 4-hour LTC Refresher Education Course, every 2 years thereafter.
  • Adjusters: Effective for licenses renewing on or July 16th, 2022 will need to complete 24 hours (including 3 hours of ethics) each license renewal period.
  • All Washington licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a one time 3 hour requirement on flood insurance.
  • Agents can take courses from any license type to complete their CE.  However, it is suggested that the agent take courses covering the lines of insurance for which they are license most of the time.

New Requirement to Sell Annuities in Washington

  • As of January 1, 2024, WAC 284-17-265 Sales of annuities—Insurance producer training will be updated to include Best Interest Standards training.  Producers that completed the 4-hour, annuity suitability training prior to January 1, 2024, will have until June 30, 2023, to complete the new 1-hour, Best Interest course. After June 30, 2023 , producers planning to sell annuities will have to complete the updated 4-hour training course.

State Specific Insurance Continuing Education Courses

  • 3 hours must be in ethics.

  • Independent self-study courses or classroom.

Monitor Requirements

  • Exams DO NOT require a monitor.
  • Online final exams are allowed to be taken with an open book.

Reporting to Your State

  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.
  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.
  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net

Insurance Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • Carryover of excess CE credit hours is not allowed.
  • Credit will not be given for courses taken more than once in a two year period.

Insurance Continuing Education Exemptions

  • Nonresidents (unless they sell long-term care)
  • Individuals holding limited licenses for Credit Life and Disability, Credit Casualty, Travel, Vehicle, or Surety
  • Any person who believes that good cause exists may request a waiver of the CE requirement
  • Adjusters

Method to Certify Completion

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents

  • Initial LTC Requirement:  A non-resident producer must complete an initial 8-hour NAIC LTC training course approved by the state of Washington OR complete an 8-hour NAIC LTC course from another state to fulfill Washington requirements.
  • On-going LTC Requirement: A 4-hour follow-up LTC course is required every 24 months.
